Patch Windows NT 3.x to run on Pentium II and newer CPU's


While installing some Microsoft Windows NT 3.x builds you can encounter the following error message.

This means that your CPU is a Pentium II or newer which those builds do not recognise and won't install to.
To fix this error, follow the instructions below.
Start the installation of your build as normal, you first start with the TXT Stage of the setup, after it completes and asks you to reboot, instead of rebooting, turn off your machine.
      Note: When you start the setup from MSDOS with WINNT.EXE /B turn off your machine after the 2nd TXT Stage!

Put in the MS-DOS 5.0 - TCB Utilities floppy and turn on the machine.
When booted type in ''edit'' as in figure below.

Go to ''File --> Open...''

As you don't have any mouse, you need use your Tab and Enter key to go to C:\WINNT35\SYSTEM32 (or WINNT31) and open ''INITIAL.INF''

Browse in the file to
     
     Figure 5: ProcessorVAR
And change to it to
     
     Figure 6: ProcessorVAR Changed
Then save the file via ''File --> Save''

You need to also do this with ''SETUP.INF'' so open it

Browse in the file to

And change to it to
     
     Figure 10: ProcessorVAR Changed
Then save the file via ''File --> Save''
     
     Figure 11: Save
Now just exit the Application via ''File --> Exit'', remove the floppy and reboot your machine to continue the Windows Installation as normal.
